Every day, I give up on my dream.
So I tell myself, I shall
Try again tomorrow.

But tomorrow comes. Tomorrow always comes,
And, that’s the problem.

Every day, I give up on my dreams.
My dedication flares; my ambition enlightens; my legs ripen
And, into another world, I depart.
But this path. This path only prolongs
As I can no longer hear the song
Of my Will.

So, by the end of the day, I give up on my dream.
I can no longer spin that wheel.

Then a day passes,
Regret buries itself in me,
I peel myself off of the battlefield,
I refrain from thinking of my shameful past
But regret already buried itself in me!

And after day after day comes and goes,
Regret is reincarnated in me
Because—you see—I try, I try
I really do. But somehow
Every day, I give up on my dreams.

Some say it’s human.
Some say it’s okay.

But, I think that’s the problem.

Teaching Around The World

I’m a poet. Although I rarely speak about it, my number one goal with poetry is to help people around the world learn English. I want students to read my poems to learn and cultivate their English, and to practice critical/creative thinking. If my poetry ever does anything remotely impactful, I would be very satisfied if it were that (especially since that is a ridiculous goal!).

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, I’ve been having Spanish and English Zoom lessons with some friends in Argentina. Yesterday, one of them who is also an English teacher in San Pedro de Jujuy, Argentina, invited me to virtually participate in one of her English classes. Her students were developing their English by reading and analyzing my poems, that I have posted on my poetry blog. Honestly, it’s a good thing that I was asked to speak English during the class because I could not express all of the emotions I was feeling in Spanish.

Poetry has changed my life. I am very far from it, but another thing that I want to do through poetry is to build schools in places around the world where formal education is scarce. Poetry has given me a new world, and in these tough times, I am happy that it is allowing me to give back to the world.

As I sit on this breakfast table
Morning still Somber, out the window
My thoughts cruise, imagination able
Exploring a world of dreams.
As the past and present give rise to hypotheticals

A Tea That Tastes Of Nostalgia
Breakfast churning,
Making these thoughts butter
As I sit on this breakfast table.
Head stuck in a void
Consciousness in somber. Perhaps, sober

Witness to all my thoughts, coasting by;
Intruding into the future;
Carelessly getting lost in the past
Where nostalgia lasts

Freshmen year of college, I met this girl who I became pretty close with. One day, I went to her dorm to visit her (like I would do annoyingly too much). After knocking, she opened the door. There was a lady friend of hers calmly sitting on her bed. The three of us hung out, I was introduced to the friend, we cracked some jokes, and then I went about my day.
.
A few days later, I saw her in the school cafeteria, and so we ate together. While eating, she asked, “Charles, what do you think we were doing in the room when you knocked?” I looked at her, smiled, then responded, “you two were kissing.” Shocked, she blushed and exclaimed, “omg how’d you know that? Wow, you’re very perceptive, Charles!”
.
That was the first time I was called perceptive. Very often, in my normal interactions with people, I would naturally feel something about them/observe something from them. When I’d express it, they would react in surprise, saying that no one had ever noticed that about them or that they’ve been trying to find a way to express that part of themselves–thus I’ve given them the words to. As I develop into and embrace my personality, I find myself constantly seeing people in ways that not many others see them in. I find myself observing and feeling things about people that I think are SUPER obvious, but soon enough I find myself alone in these observations–with a subject filled with shock and amazement.
.
Something else that I want to do, and that I am already slowly doing, is put my descriptions, perceptions, and understandings of people into my writings. I want to write poems about people. I want to extract the poem out of the person. I want to turn the person into the poem. The more that my eyes open up to it, the more I am able to see the poetry that each human is. We’re all human, but I think my special blessing is to be able to see that we’re actually more than that. If I could open each person’s eyes to that fact, I would. I’d be content if I could spend the rest of my days trying to write people into poetry. Extract the work of art that is in them. ✨
