I miss Haiti.
I miss Haiti like a corpse miss its soul

The longer they’re apart
The more the corpse loses all senses
All stability.
So it withers,
It dries.
It rejects itself. And the soul doesn’t know who.

The longer I’m away from my country
The more I lose my senses
Then my life.
So I wither,
My juice dries
The culture rejects me. The country doesn’t know who.

Whenever I go back
They ask “yoh watsap…mann”
Demand if I’m American. Force it upon me
“enbyen, ou gentan ameriken, manno” “ou bliye Kreyol ou?” **

I get sick.
No. Really, I always get sick when I go back. My immune system has weakened

Foreign lands have a way of telling you
To relax your arms. Let your guards down. You’re safe.
There’s a better future for you, here.
They wrap their hands around your shoulders.
Walk into the sunset,
From your country,
That they’re burning, behind you.

This country. Ayiti.
Has an impenetrable immunity
Shakable, but impenetrable.

But you wouldn’t understand
You’re a foreigner.

The country loved me. Caressed me. Raised me.
Planted seeds in me.
While I,
Relocated overseas. Deafened myself to its screams of my name
Then write songs about destiny
And where I’m supposed to be.

I fertilized and grew these seeds into fruits
To bring as an offering of gratitude.
“Mom, look what I made!”
“Pitit mwen, pou kisa w te kite m?”

*My child, why did you leave me?*

**well then, you’re already American, Charles? You forgot your Haitian Creole?

We were eying each other during the whole ride. At the end of it, he finally approached me and started talking to me. It was very smooth. It flowed naturally. He thought I was a work of art. A painting. With my make up, the strokes of my hair. I admitted he’s handsome.

I asked him why did he take so long to approach me. Why didn’t he talk to me on the Ferry.

He said I was standing against the wall. Phone plugged, charging. He said I didn’t have any escape route in case I decided that I didn’t want to talk to him anymore. I couldn’t go up nor down. I could only jump off the boat into the water. Which, he chuckled as he said, he hopes he is not that bad.

I asked him who would ever want to escape from him.

I asked him what were his plans for the night. He said he’s trying to take me home. I thought it a joke. But he said it without a doubt. And I didn’t hesitate not one bit. But my friend was waiting. Her and I had no plans, but she was waiting.

I should’ve asked him to come with me.

I should’ve let him take me home. I need alone time with him.

Does it bother you that people don’t care what’s inside your mind?
That after they’ve exhausted their opinions
You have choices.
To share yours that settle like dust on an untended table
Or sit in silence like ignorance swimming through cold city chaos

How do you feel knowing that when they ask a question
Start a conversation
It’s a trick for you treat them by opening the door
Their words and opinions flooding in your basket, careless of yours?

Hey everyone!

Sircharles here! This poem is an unfinished piece. It does not feel ready to me. I don’t usually do this (I’ve actually never done this before) but I wanted to ask for some help in completing this piece. How do you think I should continue with it? How would you continue with it? Any specific edits that you would make to it? Or do you think the poem is complete and good as is? The poem is about someone initiating a conversation with you (especially by asking you a question) but honestly they just want you to start talking so they’d have an excuse to share what is on their mind—they do not care about what you have to say.

Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you!

Indie Girl is a poem about my strong liking for girls who are very out of ordinary, which for the most part ends up being ladies who do not like me back, haha! Enjoy and let me know what you think please!

Mama,
Help.
Please.

Get up.
I need you.
I can’t do it anymore.

Mama,
Come back to life.
I’m trapped in living’s strife.

Where are you?
I want to get to know
Your eyes.

Mama,
It’s not fair

Why do you get to move on?
But I’m stuck, here, failing to stay strong?

the truth in my writing is so sudden
the lie in my smile is so golden

the sun gives the paper a sniff of its blessings
illuminating writers as gods; wizards of words.

the words are not exactly
the letters are not really
the sentences are not certainly
what is being said.

scriptures glowing like gold on old parchment
with the wave of letters wiping the sermons out
of your consciousness and infusing it with spells

I’m a wizard. These words of god.

don’t trust our smile.
pain is a stain throughout our writing.
turning beauty into a thrilling madness;
extract aesthetic out of the destructions.

you’ll be moved;
you will need our suffering and stumbling.
all this gold in my smile

Let life be a wind
Decisive. Indecisive
Experiences multiply
Another, before the former coasts by

Hindsight touched
by God. Distinct similarity
masked to the present
Liberty in the assurance of what’s to come.

what hangs in the air if the new age is combustion and lack of satisfaction?
everyone takes a piece of me, so i’m left with incoherent parts for the journey

Catastrophe is a normal part of life but did you forget
the times you used to be worshipped? brush shoulders
with royals. no matter how low you stoop, they still
hang prayers in the air; chandeliers in the atmosphere

a Pet of the higher kingdom chained in these polluted
mortal intersections crossing life with death. surprised
by reality—a lit face dimming of its expectations

did you forget?
it’s been a long journey.

If the Night Could Speak

stories that end in wit and regret:
memories overseas, encounters with domestic lovers
revealing truths about ourselves, the world:
astrological placements, society’s racial cleverness

“I’ll probably write a poem about this tomorrow”
so where do I start? maybe at your destination
which really are intentions that you carry around
the things you want to achieve, waiting on you
weighing you down, you fall into regret

The City Night is a greedy audience with a promise:
we will never know who it brings our stories to.
So, maybe we’re not really strangers
after all, my stars prophesied about you

We’re sitting on rocks as you describe the effect your sister left
A shadow constantly seen each time you finally fix the lights onto you
an inheritance following you, so your success and failures exalt her glory.
You speak to me like you knew we shared the same story.

Take me around your world, around the world;
leave this night to experience the nights in other cities
While here, sitting on rocks.

Indie Girl

I have a soft side for Indie Girls.
Girls I’ll never get; girls there are no formulae to getting
I have an addiction with just spectating.
Knowing I cannot do anything, but never testing that theory

Sometimes I’d much rather look
with a virgin mind filled with possibilities, fantasies
than to try
then be left with a mind filled with regrets
and intellectual ways to improve next time

Ones that will probably, just as well, fail.

I constantly have this need: step into another’s world
and I have. But their similarities start to blend
until they all look the same
until I can predict the probabilities without delving,
I tell myself.

I have a keen attraction for pieces that do not fit; bodies that can flow with the current
but they just DON’T!
The Indie Girl steps me into another world, into her world
outside of this world (filled with commonalities, similarities, and coincidences)

I’ve always had a passion for adventure—although with fear
I’ve swarmed myself among creatures whose speech is unintelligible
I’ve been trapped in infinitely expanding forests, caves of no bottom
some, I was only able to escape by opening my eyes

The Indie Girl is an adventure waiting for an outburst
an estranged world in a society that has evolved to normalities and routines.
It’s a dare we all have the outburst for—though with fear
because comfortability is addicting so flux becomes threatening
It’s a love I want to get lost in.
but I guess I’ve gotten comfortable with my potential achievements and sins
So, instead, I spectate.
